A lot of fans were shocked to see that Hololive and its vtubers weren’t present at the 2024 Vtuber Awards, but Filian recently explained why and alluded to legal reasons that kept the network out of the event.
The 2024 Vtuber Awards proved to be a big success this year. It reached nearly 100,000 concurrent viewers, which is a big jump from its first year in 2023. While many popular vtubers were there, fans were a bit confused over Hololive’s members no-showing the event. Hololive vtubers are some of the most popular on all platforms, including names like Gawr Gura, Houshou Marine, and Minato Aqua.
In fact, Hololive members won nine total awards at the show but were not there to accept them. Filian shed some light on why that
After Hololive member Fuwamoco won Vtuber of the Year, fans became confused as to why the popular vtubers were not at the show. During a recent stream, Filian told her chat the real reason why no Hololive members appeared on the award show she hosted.
“The problem is when it comes to an award show and all the laws between Japan and the US…it’s a complicated situation, so we couldn’t have it this year,” Filian said.
It doesn’t seem like there’s any drama or ill will between Hololive and the Vtuber Awards, luckily. Filian stated that there was a “lot of interest” from the Hololive talent, but legal reasons unfortunately got in the way. However, Filian is hoping that the problem can be solved.
“For next year, we’re going to see if we can figure it out. It’s just nice, bro. It’s a show for everybody. So next year, I hope we can have them on. It’s not the corpo, it’s not the talent, it’s just that there’s a lot of laws to make this stuff happen,” Filian said.
The issues surrounding the Vtuber Awards could just lie in the name of the awards being given out. For example, Best Vtuber wasn’t chosen based on any hard metrics, like followers or viewership, and was instead a result of a popular vote. Japan has regulations that state that an award show must have factual evidence backing up the chosen winner.
Given this statement, there is a good chance that Hololive and its parent company, Cover Corporation, could feature in the VTuber Awards 2025, assuming both sides can overcome legal issues.
As for what these problems are, Japan reportedly has regulations that mean if an award show states that someone is the best at something, like the “Best VTuber,” they need to have factual evidence to back that up. It’s possible that the Vtuber Awards could work within these regulations, changing award titles or using a different metric for choosing the winner.
So far, however, there’s no concrete confirmation that Hololive will attend the Vtuber Awards 2025, but it seems like that’s a goal for both Filian and Hololive.
