FaZe Clan has prolonged its tournament life at IEM Cologne. In a close matchup against Spirit, the Superstar lineup won 2-1 after playing Vertigo for the first time in two years.
It was FaZe’s ‘youngsters’ twistzz and broky that shined on Spirit’s map pick of Overpass. Without the incredible heroics of the duo Spirit would have taken the victory in convincing fashion.
Now, they ‘only’ won it in 16-11, but the stage was set for the series: FaZe’s individuals were firing on all cilinders. This trend continued on Inferno, with twistzz being joined by rain at the top of the leaderboards this time. FaZe tied the series, Vertigo had to be the decider.
Neither team had played Vertigo in a long time going into the series. This lack of experience leads to a very stale match, with both in-game leaders having limited playbooks. Eventually, FaZe was just a bit better in executing B, handing them the map, series, and spot in the semifinal of the lower bracket.
In the other opening match of the day, Brazillian’s best bet on silverware ousted Renegades from the tournament. The Aussies have had an impressive tournament run thus far, as not many expected them to survive the grueling Play-In. But the fairytale ends, and Renegades return to the land of the long weekend.
While Furia stays alive, the road does not become easier. In the next round, either Heroic or Astralis await the Brazilians. The Danes meet each other later today, with a spot in the play-offs on the line.
