Hololive hosts many generations of vtubers, and Hololive ReGLOSS is one of the more unorthodox groups under its umbrella.
Although Hololive has exploded in popularity thanks to memes and streamers, the diversity of content undeniably plays a role. Hololive offers content creators of many kinds, not just typical streamers. For example, Tokino Sora and Azki are more known for their vocal talents over regular streams. In September 2023, Hololive officially debuted a new unit named ReGLOSS, with five members filling out its first generation.
However, some fans are confused about the unit’s status within Hololive as a whole.
Hololive ReGLOSS is a branch of Hololive dedicated to groups of musical performers, like traditional idols.
While Hololive has no shortage of talented musicians and singers, most aren’t dedicated performers. Other than milestone events like HoloFest, most members tend to stream video games, chat streams, and host other variety shows.
In contrast to other generations, ReGLOSS is reportedly under a different management style. The group performs together, with added support for sponsorships on musical streams and concerts. In a collab with ReGLOSS member Otonose Kanade, Hoshimachi Suisei revealed the hardships of Hololive members who want to be taken seriously as streamers.
“Promoting yourself in a way that people think of you as a singer is really not easy as a Hololive member,” said Suisei.
There’s an expectation of Vtubers to do more than “just sing”, especially as their primary source of content is streaming. Kanade notes that Cover advertising ReGLOSS as a music group means she’s “blessed”, as people will associate her more easily with singing.
The members of Hololive ReGLOSS are Hiodoshi Ao, Otonose Kanade, Ichijou Ririka, Juufuutei Raden, and Todoroki Hajime.
Unlike the usual menagerie of gods, furries, and robots, Hololive ReGLOSS features a cast solely composed of humans. Given the group’s musical slant, the art direction may want to focus on more grounded aspects of the characters instead of the more chaotic vibes of their predecessors.
A manga artist who loves solitude… or so the people around Hiodoshi Ao think. She tries to play herself off as cool and aloof, but beyond the surface, she is quite the otaku. She cares a lot about how she is perceived, which is why she is always dressed immaculately in public. How she is at home, though, is a Pandora’s box.
An aspiring musician, whose life also has ups and downs like a crescendo. Music is always by Otonose Kanade’s side. She wears her heart on her sleeve and is capable of putting incredible amounts of effort into the things she enjoys. On the other hand, anything she dislikes immediately puts a frown on her face, showing she still retains a childish side.
However, she can be bribed with good food.
An enterprising entrepreneur on the up-and-up. Ichijou Ririka started her company on a complete whim, but things seem to be going well so far. She has excellent people skills and is an excellent communicator, which allows her to handle transactions with foreign companies by herself. Her secret to success is a good night’s sleep. Meanwhile, she has quite the unruly side when it comes to her private life, and she can be quite lacking when it comes to chores around the home.
A grandma’s girl who covers herself in both tradition and revolution and sees big dreams in the rakugo world. Juufuutei Raden loves arts and culture of all kinds—new and old, Eastern and Western. She visits museums so often that she is left penny-pinching the rest of the time. It is most certainly not due to her frequent purchases of alcohol. Through her encounter with rakugo, she has come to enjoy public speaking more than ever, and she is fervishly writing up her own skits.
A jane-of-all-trades seeking to be the #1 badass in the universe. Why the universe? Why “badass”? Nobody knows. Todoroki Hajime’s the restless sort and, to no surprise, enjoys physical activities. Also to no surprise, she’s not good with tools and equipment, meaning she’s a disaster-class in cooking. Her trusty partner Banpen teaches her every day about how to be a badass.
