OnlyFangs finally had its first proper raid over the weekend and unfortunately the characters of several notable streamers died in the process.
Originally founded by Thomas Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris, Imane “Pokimane” Anys, and Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo, OnlyFangs gains fame as a World of Warcraft Classic hardcore guild by consisting only of streamers. Up until recently, fans have mostly talked about OnlyFangs for its game drama rather than its actual in-game play. But on February 1, the guild finally took on its first big raid: Molten Core.
Though the first OnlyFangs raid was ultimately successful, some streamers’ characters did not live long enough to reap the rewards.
During the Molten Core raid, a number of OnlyFangs members died in one boss battle or another, as well as when facing miscellaneous enemy encounters.
Traditionally, a Molten Core raid requires 40 players who are all at level 60. After a month of build-up, OnlyFangs revealed its full raiding roster just days before the debut raid. The team consisted of both WoW veterans as well as newcomers such as popular streamer Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp to make things more interesting for viewers.
Out of the entire lineup, only six members died permanently during the raid, as well as in a pre-raid encounter with epic dragon boss Onyxia. The lost streamers were:
Viewers agree that most of the player deaths were ultimately avoidable. Had tanks taunted more and AHMPY blocked the damage appropriately, the experienced raider and streamer could have survived Molten Core. Pokelawls and Savix both died to the dragon Onyxia, while final boss Ragnaros killed AnnieFuschia and Gunnar. Meanwhile, Fandy was unfortunately knocked out before anyone even had a chance to respond.
Despite all this, in a hardcore experience like the one these players and streamers took on, perhaps it’s a testament to the guild’s overall skill and dedication that only six players died.
Several of the dead OnlyFangs streamers already have alternate characters who just need to be leveled up further to qualify for the next raid. Still, that doesn’t help them in losing out on the best Molten Core loot and rewards.
After six hours of gameplay and several players dying in the process, OnlyFangs finally beat raid boss Ragnaros and the Molten Core dungeon to collect its full rewards.
Each of the nine Molten Core bosses leading up to Ragnaros drops a tier-one armor piece exclusive to one class as well as other items. After defeating The Firelord, players can grab tier-two armor and potentially the Eye of Sulfuras. Perhaps more important than the actual items themselves are what they can be used to make.
Tyler1 has expressed an ultimate desire to force Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker. World of Warcraft players can only get the item after a long and expensive questline, along with obtaining several boss drop items from Molten Core. Given that several of the less-experienced streamers expressed their reluctance to come back for another raid, Tyler1 could be waiting quite a while to get Thunderfury.
The next OnlyFangs raid is set to start on February 8 and will continue through the weekend. This time, Tyler1 himself will be leading the team. Perhaps the guild won’t only beat the raid, but also beat its new streaming record of 430,000 concurrent viewers.
