The most popular esports games

Esports, also known as competitive video games, has exploded over the last decade, turning into a multi-billion dollar industry. And when there’s money – there are players. But with so many competitive games across different genres, which titles truly stand at the top in 2026? In this article, we’re ranking the top 10 biggest esports titles in the world right now.

PUBG and PUBG Mobile

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG for short, was the first hit online video game in the Battle Royale genre. Its PC version gained massive popularity during its first few years, but the hype eventually died down. The game also changed its official name to PUBG: Battlegrounds.

Though the PC version is no longer as popular as it was, which might be due to much larger competition in the genre and relatively old-school gameplay, the mobile version is. PUBG Mobile is particularly popular in the Asian region, especially in countries like India, China, and Indonesia. India has its own version of the game, called Battlegrounds Mobile: India.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends may not have the same viewership as the other games on the list, but numbers don’t tell the whole story. Apex Legends has a comfortable seat within the top 10 biggest esports titles thanks to its ALGS (Apex Legends Global Series) professional league, and the fact that it is enjoyed by many of the biggest content creators in the world.

This Battle Royale game has some of the best graphics in the industry, making professional matches a treat to watch. It also helps that gameplay is fast-paced and complex, making it entertaining to play and watch regularly.

Fortnite

Fortnite is Epic Games’ golden goose. It was easily the most popular esports game in 2019, with its World Cup breaking prize pool and viewership records. Though you won’t see numbers like that today, Fortnite is still a strong contender in the esports scene.

Fortnite doesn’t fully focus on its professional scene – they lean towards collaborations and embracing pop culture. In this game, you’ll see skins of celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Travis Scott, alongside athletes including LeBron James and Neymar Jr. These collaborations, and the abundance of game modes, make Fortnite (together with Roblox and Minecraft) the most popular games for the younger gamers.

Call of Duty (Warzone & CDL)

Call of Duty is was always a dominant force in the North American esports, but the game also has a decent fanbase in the rest of the world. It’s one of the oldest franchises in the esports industry, and is doing well for its age. The game is known for the Call of Duty League, or CDL, one of the most-anticipated and hyped franchised esports leagues in the world, which has proven to be a good business decision, albeit only in North America.

Call of Duty thrives with two scenes: Warzone and the Call of Duty League. Generally, the playerbase is, on average, older than some of the other games on this list, and most CoD players play on console, making it an interesting choice for FPS gamers.

Rocket League

If you like football and gaming, there’s no better game than Rocket League. Rocket League is one of the most accessible esports titles out there, as the game’s concept is unique but also very easy to understand. In its essence, it’s just like football (soccer), but with cars.

The RLCS is steadily gaining more and more traction every year. Rocket League gameplay is fast-paced and only lasts 5 minutes, making it exciting for viewers with low attention spans. The game is also simple to watch, so players who have never tried the game can still follow what’s happening on their screens.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB)

Mobile Legends is the most popular mobile esports title, dominating Southeast Asia. It has come to the point where anyone in the region recognizes the game, even if they’re not gamers themselves.

The game focuses on the essentials of the MOBA genre, making it very easy for new players to learn. The M World Championship tournament series is where fans can watch the best players compete. These events have broken viewership records due to how popular the game is in Asian countries.

Dota 2

Dota 2 is widely considered the most complex esports title. Though the game may have a smaller player base and viewership count than its main competitor, League of Legends, Dota 2 has one of the strongest competitive scenes in the esports space and a strong ranking system. You’ll only see loyal and die-hard fans who never seem to get bored.

Dota 2’s crown jewel is The International, which is its annual World Championship tournament. TI is historically known as the biggest esports event in terms of prize pool, breaking past the $40 million mark at one point. Despite waning prize pools in recent years, Dota is still a very popular games and its esports scene is still strong. However, it loses to League of Legends in all popularity metrics, with many people constantly asking ‘is Dota 2 dying?‘.

VALORANT

Riot Games broke the esports world when VALORANT was introduced in 2020. The game features a concept that was never seen before: a tactical shooter where players can select agents that have unique abilities. So, instead of relying on raw aim, players can use these abilities to outsmart their opponents.

Although VALORANT is one of the newest esports titles on this list, its esports scene has seen tremendous growth over its short time span. The VALORANT Champions Tour not only brings top-tier gameplay, but also rivalries and storylines that fans can follow.

Counter-Strike 2 (CS2)

The Counter-Strike franchise was first introduced over two decades ago, but it still remains as one of the most popular esports titles in the world. Recently, Valve rolled out Counter-Strike 2, giving the game enhanced graphics and new mechanics.

The CS2 esports scene is unbelievably healthy. The game is very accessible to viewers and esports bettors, as gameplay is very straightforward and easy to follow – you can understand what’s happening even if you’ve never played the game before. CS2 Majors reliably draw in millions of viewers and are the most popular esports events of the year.

League of Legends (LoL)

Finally, we have League of Legends – the undisputed king of esports. LoL’s annual World Championship is just like the Super Bowl. Stadiums are sold out in minutes, and viewership records are always shattered with ease.

Riot Games always does an excellent job of building hype around the World Championship. You’d always see decorated arenas as well as musical performances leading up to the grand finals. LoL is also home to Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, one of the top League of Legends players in the world and the most recognizable face in all of gaming and esports.
