Grand Theft Auto 6 is almost guaranteed to be the biggest video game of 2025, but it’s not because everyone’s going to be playing it. In fact, it seems like GTA 6 is going to be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S with PC, Xbox One, and PS4 players unable to get in on the action.
Rockstar Games fans have been frustrated with the company over recent years. Since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, the company’s sole focus has seemingly been on expanding GTA Online and porting its back catalog of games to anything that can run them. Now fans are mad at the studio for the exact opposite reason.
Alongside the official release of the GTA 6 reveal trailer and estimated launch date, Rockstar Games issued a statement that discussed the game’s platforms. Though it isn’t explicitly stated, all signs point to GTA 6 not coming out on the PC for a long while.
Rockstar Games issued a statement that confirms that GTA 6 will be coming out on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but mentions no other platforms.
“Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., is proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X/S games and entertainment systems in 2025,” the studio says in a statement.
It’s not plainly stated that the game isn’t coming out to other platforms, but all omissions can likely be taken as confirmation of the news. There’s no reason that Rockstar would hold back on confirming a PC, PS4, or Xbox One release for GTA 6 if one was planned.
It’s somewhat surprising that GTA 6 isn’t coming out on Xbox One or PS4. It’s not necessarily shocking given the amount of activity shown on-screen during the GTA 6 trailer, but it’s a sharp change from how GTA 5 was released on three generations of consoles and PC. Though the PS4 and Xbox One have still gotten the majority of large game releases in 2023, they’re more than three years into “past-gen” territory at this point and could be five years deep by GTA 6’s launch.
GTA 6 not coming to PC is more shocking, however.
Rockstar has a history of not porting its games to PC quickly, with GTA 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 taking anywhere from seven to 19 months to make the jump. Red Dead Redemption 1 never got a PC release, even though it was recently re-released on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. PC gaming has become far more normalized over recent years, which makes the omission surprising.
Odds are that GTA 6 will come out on PC at some point, but Rockstar’s history suggests the game might not come out until 2026 or later.
While PC, PS4, and Xbox One gamers won’t be getting GTA 6, there’s a slim hope that Nintendo fans will. Though GTA 6 will not be coming out on Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2 could potentially welcome the game.
Details are still murky regarding the next-gen Nintendo console and its technical capabilities. Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed the existence of a new console, so Rockstar wouldn’t openly acknowledge its plans to develop a game for the platform. Fans shouldn’t get too hopeful, though.
Rockstar Games has neither confirmed nor denied plans to launch GTA 6 on the Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever else its next-gen console might be. If the studio is working on a Switch 2 version, it will likely say so shortly after the new console is revealed.
