Dota 2 is a nearly 14-year-old game (if you include the beta) with a Dota 2 player count in the millions, but checking the System Requirements before you try and play is always worth it. While you’d think a game that’s leaning on the older side wouldn’t need a hugely powerful PC, you might be surprised if you haven’t checked.
With multiple visual and technical upgrades over the years, the requirement to have Steam (which needs a Windows 10 or greater compatible PC) and other elements means you might find that old, dusty laptop from 2012 might not handle Dota 2, but then again, it might! So here’s our guide to making sure Dota 2 runs on your system.
Below we’ve put together a table of the minimum system requirements for Dota 2 for PC, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux.
| – | Windows | macOS | SteamOS / Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 (Steam requires Windows 10+) or newer | macOS 10.15 or newer | Ubuntu 12.04 or newer (SteamOS will work by default) |
| Processor | Dual-core Intel / AMD ~2.8 GHz | Dual-core Intel | Dual-core Intel / AMD ~2.8 GHz |
| Memory (RAM) | 4gb | 4gb | 4gb |
| Graphics (GPU) | NVIDIA GeForce 8600/9600GT, ATI/AMD Radeon HD2600/3600 | Metal-capable GPU (AMD GCN+, NVIDIA Kepler+, Intel HD 4000+) | AMD GCN+, NVIDIA Kepler+, or Intel HD 5000+ |
| DirectX / API | DirectX 11 or greater | – | – |
| Storage | ~60gb | ~60gb | ~60gb |
| Sound | DirectX-compatible Card | – | OpenAL-compatible Card |
| Input | Keyboard and Mouse (Controller Supported) | Keyboard and Mouse (Controller Supported) | Keyboard and Mouse (Controller Supported) |
The minimum requirements for Dota 2 are surprisingly low. A dual-core processor and just 4GB of RAM are achievable even with most PCs. The graphics card requirements are drastically low, the Nvidia GeForce 8600 came out in 2008, and is practically ancient in GPU terms.
If you’ve bought your PC in the last decade, there’s a high likelihood that Dota 2 will operate. What’s more, you may even manage to run things with older tech than that, although from personal experience, the 2010s ThinkPad laptop might struggle a bit.
Additionally, while 60gb is the recommended amount, we’d suggest upping that to 70 or 80. A quick glance at our own installation and it’s pushing 67gp right now. So just give yourself a buffer.
But if you’re looking for a more complete experience, we’ve put together some recommended specs. Honestly, some of this might be overkill.
| Dota 2 Recommended System Requirements | Windows |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 (Steam requires Windows 10+) or newer |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-10400F or similar |
| Memory (RAM) | 16gb |
| Graphics (GPU) | NVIDIA GTX 1060 or greater |
| DirectX / API | DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 70-80gb (SSD prefered) |
| Sound | DirectX-compatible Card |
| Input | Keyboard and Mouse |
For our recommended system requirements, we’ve upped the processor to a four to six-core processor, and a luxurious 16gb of RAM. That’ll make sure things run smoothly in the background, and allow you do have other programs and apps running at the same time if you need. For storage, we’ve upped the requirements by 20gb to give you a buffer and recommend an SSD to ensure quick load times. If you’re experiencing a lot of DCs and loading into lobbies slowly, an SSD is essential.
We’ve also specified that a Windows PC is the best way to play. For Dota 2, that’s currently the case, although that might change to Linux via Steam OS in the future. The keyboard and mouse are the primary means of playing Dota 2.
You can also adjust your game setup to match Dota 2 pro settings (what professional players use) as they can give you a slight performance edge. Also, the game is fairly easy to install but if you want to go through the process as fast as possible, check out our How to Download Dota 2 guide for the necessary steps.
