When did Dota 2 release?

Dota 2 release date

Dota 2 isn’t exactly a new game, despite frequent updates, a huge player base, and a thriving esports scene. In fact, it’s over a decade old, and still going strong. But when exactly was Dota 2’s release date?

With most games, this is a simple question with a simple answer. With Dota 2, it’s a little bit more complicated, due to an early beta release and a later full launch. So keep reading and find out just when Dota 2’s release date was.

Dota 2 release date

Dota 2’s official release date was July 9, 2013. That’s the date when the game saw its full release on Steam. However, players were in-game and enjoying Dota 2 as far back as 2011.

How? Well the game had a protracted beta period, much like current Valve development title Deadlock. As a result, the release date could be listed as early 2011, late 2011, or anytime in between.

Dota 2’s origins

In case you didn’t know, Dota 2 is a sequel to the Defense of the Ancients Allstars mod for Warcraft III. DotA was originally a variety of mods, with DotA Allstars generally regarded as the mainline and ‘official’ version.

The popularity of the mod spawned multiple stand-alone sequels, starting with League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, and later, Dota 2. Dota 2 was created by Valve capitalizing on the pedigree and namesake of the original mod, something they had to contest a few legal challenges against Riot Games and Blizzard to secure.

Dota 2 History and beta release

Development on Dota 2 started in the late 2000s and was officially revealed in 2009. After some internal beta testing in 2010, beta keys started being distributed to top players of the original DotA Allstars mod for Warcraft III in 2011. This culminated in the first edition of The International in 2011, after which the game was made widely available with public beta keys for the first time.

Still, these beta keys were given out only by players with existing access, or in limited drops by developer Valve. Still, the game grew quickly, and by 2012, almost all the people who wanted a key, had one.

Dota 2’s full release

Dota 2’s full release would come two years after the initial beta wave in 2013. On July 19, ahead of the now third edition of The International, players finally got their hands on the full version of Dota 2.

With 102 heroes, it was a very different game from the one we know today, but this was the true start of things. No longer did players need a beta key; they could download Dota 2 on Steam.

Dota 2 source 2 upgrade, Dota 2 Reborn

Two years after the release of Dota 2, the game went through a huge overhaul as it upgraded to the Source 2 engine. With a new interface, the introduction of custom game, and an overhaul of the social and DotaTV features, Dota 2 Reborn was like a whole new game. Although the Dota 2 system requirements were slightly beefed up, it’s still possible to play the game on weaker hardware.

Since then, Dota 2 has continued to evolve and seen plenty of updates that have jokingly been called “Dota 3” because of how huge they are. Most recently a big update to the game, called Wandering Waters, came in February 2025, as part of Patch 7.38. That update expanded the map, added many new features, and took the game beyond the basic tenets of a MOBA game.

Today, the Dota 2 player count is in the millions and with the best Dota 2 teams competing in prestigious tournaments (e.g. The International), it’s safe to say that the game is still going strong.
