CS2 skins rent feature turns rare AWP into disappointment

The new CS2 feature to rent skins is great, but players are just now realizing a slight downside.

Players were over the moon when Valve announced the skin rent feature in CS2 on May 23. Case openers can now access the entire collection for a week for the price of a single key. It’s a cost-effective way for players to enjoy skins without draining their wallets, but what if you unlock the dream skin of many CS2 fans?

One such incident has happened, and the community can’t decide whether to laugh or feel pity for the owner.

CS2 skins rent second cleanest AWP Chrome Cannon

CS2 player sadly rents a juicer AWP | Chrome Cannon skin

The story goes that on May 26, a lucky yet unlucky CS2 player rents a single Kilowatt case only to uncover an AWP | Chrome Cannon with an incredibly low float. At 0.000213, this skin would have been the second most-coveted Chrome Cannon if it were available to sell. Since rented skins disappear from the game after a week, the skin cannot be traded or sold on the Steam Market. The case opener only has a week to boast about owning the second-cleanest AWP | Chrome Cannon skin in all of CS2.

Had the player chosen to unlock the case to buy, they would possibly own a skin worth several hundred times as much as a key. According to CSFloat, the lowest float for existing AWP | Chrome Cannon is 0.00021 owned by a player named Griff. That skin is currently not for sale. For reference, skins with worse floats than his are selling for well above $1,000. But since the second-best copy is merely a rented skin, this rare AWP skin technically doesn’t exist in the Steam marketplace, making players feel bad for the owner.

As a result, speculation surrounds the renting feature in CS2 and its potential impact on skin pricing, rarity, and popularity. CS2 players can rent new skins for much cheaper than buying, which could lead to more players equipping rare skins, potentially affecting their market value due to increased accessibility.

How to rent skins in CS2

Here’s how to rent the entire Kilowatt collection in CS2, save for the knife, at the cheap key cost of $2.50.

  • Buy a Kilowatt Case from the Steam marketplace if you don’t already own it
  • Purchase a key to open the case
  • Select “Open for rent” to access all Kilowatt items for seven days
