CS2 launched without Cache to fan disappointment, but mapper Shawn “FMPONE” Snelling is already giving sneak peeks at the revamped A site and mid.
Despite its dedicated player base and competitive history, Valve sidelined Cache for the second half of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s history. However, a sizable player base still enjoyed the map, prompting Valve to keep it in the game’s lineup. After a small refresh in 2019, the map languished in obscurity, never again joining the active duty map pool.
Creator FMPONE has been slowly revealing the Counter-Strike 2 version of Cache as he works on it, and the legendary mapper has finally pulled back the curtain on A site.
The developer behind Cache has shared some in-game screen shots of A site, reigniting hope among dormant Cache fans. Similar to Overpass, it seems the map is undergoing a complete overhaul instead of minor tweaks.
In the new CS2 version of Cache, the random red container in the middle of the A site has been replaced with a giant tank that appears to have the same hitbox and size. However, it looks much cooler and has some space at the bottom. This could open up new strategic possibilities for both Ts and CTs. Layout-wise, A site looks the same, with some exceptions of props and box placements.
Mid gets more visual detailing with additional murals, focusing on destroyed debris under and around the vents. Despite the revamped visuals, the gameplay should be mostly the same as old Cache mid.
One significant change is the overall ambiance of the location, which used to be darker and cooler. The new Cache now features warmer tones thanks to the sun shining overhead. These recent adjustments have made the map closely resemble the majority of yellow-toned maps in CS2. Understandably, this change has sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some expressing concerns about the new color scheme.
“I am personally not sure the map pool needs more orange/gold-ish lit maps. Would be interesting to see how the map would look like with a more depressing blue/green-ish lighting scenario,” one fan commented.
The map is still a work in progress, so it’s challenging to form definitive opinions at this stage. According to FMPONE, the art is not finalized. The brighter lighting may change in the final version if the community expresses strong concerns about the yellow tint. Until it officially arrives in CS2, Cache mid and A site are still putty in FMPONE’s hands.
