Apogee Esports has stunned fans at PGL Bucharest but can it keep its run going against the likes of Aurora?
PGL Bucharest has seen Complexity Gaming and Apogee Esports defy expectations to an extreme degree. While most of the focus has been on the North American stalwart, Apogee Esports has arguably been even more impressive. The team has already beaten the favorite to win PGL Bucharest, as well as another strong contender.
Apogee was seeded very low in PGL Bucharest, though. That continues to dog the team as it heads into another brutally tough match against Aurora.
Aurora and Apogee Esports will fight for a spot in the PGL Bucharest playoffs on April 9, 2025. Both teams have a 2-1 record at this point in the group stage. The loser isn’t eliminated from the tournament, but will have to play a do-or-die match in order to advance into the playoffs.
For those who missed it, Aurora acquired the roster of Eternal Fire ahead of PGL Bucharest. The team was one of the favorites to win the tournament and looked ready to cruise into the playoffs with wins over Pain Gaming and Legacy. 3DMAX proved to be more than a speed bump and dealt the team a tough 2-1 defeat.
The Aurora roster is still deadly, and is still likely to make a deep run in PGL Bucharest:
Aurora has a roughly even winrate on most of the CS2 active duty pool, with three big exceptions. The team is very good on Nuke and Anubis, and it bans Ancient. There’s no real weakness there for opponents to exploit.
Apogee Esports has been competing in tier-two online tournaments throughout its history. The organization signed its all-Polish roster in December 2024 and it has mostly underwhelmed since. Its biggest wins of the year have been against Fnatic, Ninjas in Pyjamas, BetBoom Team, and OG.
Though it’s a proven tier-two regional team, Apogee was expected to wash out quickly against top-20 competition. Instead, it finds itself on the verge of making the playoffs with wins over The MongolZ and Astralis. Here is the full Apogee Esports roster:
Apogee doesn’t have any maps where it looks to be uniquely strong or weak to this point in 2025. Purely in terms of statistics, it’s best on Nuke, with an 11-5 record. Its most commonly played map has been Ancient, where it’s gone 13-8. It has a losing record on both Train and Dust 2, while generally avoiding Inferno.
But it’s worth noting that Apogee’s body of work has exclusively come against much lower-ranked teams than anyone it has faced at PGL Bucharest. In Bucharest, it lost to Furia on Mirage and Dust 2. It then beat The MongolZ on Nuke and Ancient, then beat Astralis on Ancient and Mirage.
Apogee Esports has never played against Eternal Fire. Apogee actually played against Aurora in one of the final matches of its previous Russian roster at Galaxy Battle 2025 Starter on March 22. Aurora won that match 2-1, but this is a completely different Aurora roster in PGL Bucharest.
Aurora Gaming is a big 1.25 favorite to beat Apogee Esports in PGL Bucharest’s group stage. The moneyline on Apogee is 3.9, so betting sites are not taking that victory over The MongolZ as an indication of any major progress by the team.
Aurora should be able to comfortably beat Apogee Esports in PGL Bucharest’s group stage. Apogee Esports has impressed but the wheels aren’t wobbling on Aurora like they seemingly are with Team Falcons. Aurora has looked largely on point in PGL Bucharest. It’s hard to buy into a regional team being able to win, even if they did just get a victory over The MongolZ.
