Ubisoft has used its Ubisoft Forward 2022 Showcase to announce three new Assassin’s Creed games.
The announcements of the titles come after rumors surfaced of the company working on three games back in July.
One of the new games, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, will be set in Feudal Japan. Feudal Japan is an era fans have long been requested to see in the games. The game will be the next “flagship” title in the series and will be released after Assassin’s Creed Mirage in 2023. As of yet, there is no official release date or even platforms listed.
Assassin’s Creed Japan – as we expect it will be called it is officially named – was unveiled alongside Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. There was also the reveal of Assassin’s Creed Infinity.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is expected to be an Action-RPG in a similar vein to Assassin’s Creed Origins. Not much else is known about it, as the trailer doesn’t tell us much. What we do see, however, is an Assassin in black robes, with a one-handed sword and the iconic hidden blade.
We also see the return of the Animus, telling us the narrative will feature both present-day and past-era elements.
The second new Assassin’s Creed game to be announced is Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe.
The imagery in the short trailer for this new Assassin’s Creed game is certainly haunting. There’s an Assassin’s insignia formed out of broken branches twirling above a flame. The music in the trailer is also dark and foreboding, with a dog barking in the background.
A very different type of Assassin’s Creed game.
Marc-Alexis Cote
Ubisoft developer Marc-Alexis Cote said that the game will also be a “new flagship title”, as well as a “different type of game.”. If you pay attention to these rumors from Bloomberg, they suggest this new Assassin’s Creed game will be set in 16th-Century Europe.
16th Century Europe was a dark time as 80,000 people were executed in mass hysteria. The hysteria surrounded those executed reportedly being in league with the devil.
Fear was a key element in these 16th Century Witch Trials, could that mean that this new Assassin’s Creed game will be a horror game?
The final new Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, sees a return to the Action-Adventure foundations the franchise was built upon.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be the first of the new games to be released. Although the date is not yet confirmed, it will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One. It will also be released on PC through the Ubisoft Store or the Epic Games store.
The game will be set in 9th Century Baghdad and follow Basim decades before his appearance in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. There will be a heavy return to the stealth and parkour that made the franchise so popular.
Also announced is Assassin’s Creed Infinity.
Assasin’s Creed Infinity will be a hub for the games and for players to share their collective experiences of the franchise.
Infinity is going to be a hub that will unite all our different experiences and our players together in meaningful ways
Marc-Alexis Cote
Both Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe and Assassin’s Creed Codename Red will be available through the hub. It will see closer collaboration between the Ubisoft Montreal and Quebec studios to guide and define the future of the franchise.
