When it comes to chaotic gremlins, Maid Mint and Pomu Rainpuff are among the most iconic Vtubers, but are they the same person?
One of the most appealing aspects of vtubers is anonymity. By playing a fictional character with nearly no associations with a person’s real identity, entertainers are more free to do whatever they please. As a result, many vtubers famously graduate only to resurface as another character. While it wasn’t too common during the early era of vtubing, the trend exploded after agencies picked up indie talents left and right.
Nijisanji, one of, if not the biggest, vtuber agencies in the world, have plenty of examples, and few are more infamous than Maid Mint and Pomu Rainpuff.
Maid Mint and Pomu Rainpuff are confirmed to be the same person.
Notably, Maid Mint auditioned for Hololive English in 2020 and only debuted as an independent vtuber after she wasn’t selected. In July 2020, Mint made her humble debut, garnering 200 viewers and immediately dunked on by fans for her “toaster mic.” She would famously keep the mic for a courageously long time, even as she attracted more and more followers.
By March 2021, Mint had amassed 15,000 subscribers and even debuted a second model. That’s why her sudden retirement in April 2021 surprised loyal fans, given her growing success. Thus, Mint’s streams, videos, and accounts were either privated or deleted.
In May 2021, a suspiciously familiar-sounding fairy by the name of Pomu Rainpuff made her Nijisanji English debut and drew instant comparisons to Maid Mint. As the first member to debut the Lazulight group, Pomu immediately garnered thousands of fans, both new and old. Her chaotic personality and passionate antics made her a star for Nijisanji.
By August 2023, she had amassed over 600,000 subscribers and collaborated with talents from all over the internet. Once again, she surprised fans in January 2024 when she announced her graduation. She cited creative differences and burnout among her top reasons for leaving the company but wished all her fellow talents and the company well upon her exit.
Things would be silent for three months until Maid Mint announced her official return, collaborating with VShojo talent Matara Kan. As of August 2024, Mint boasts over 250,000 subscribers, significantly boosting her numbers. Maid Mint is a classic success story, showcasing that not every change of character comes from any particular drama. “It is how it is,” as the saying goes, and Mint made the most of every opportunity.
