One of the most popular mobile gaming franchises in the world, Angry Birds is coming to other platforms besides mobile, more than 12 years after its initial release.
Finnish developer Rovio’s initial release, in Dec. 2009, has spawned a franchise. Indeed, Angry Birds became one of the most popular mobile titles, with over 20 mobile game releases to date.
In Rovio Entertainment’s Q3 2022 earnings release, the game developer talked about some of its upcoming games and noted that it has ten games under development.
The one that stood out was Angry Birds NEXT – a cross-platform, multiplayer game. While Rovio didn’t reveal anything else about the title (including which platforms the game would be available on), it noted that its Montreal studio is in charge of developing it.
Notably, Rovio revealed that the Montreal studio is “refocusing” its strategy to expand the franchise. To do this, they have appointed a new studio head, Andréane Meunier. Meunier has a strong background in console gaming, having worked at Ubisoft, Google Stadia, and Unity.
If the hire is anything to go by, Angry Birds NEXT will likely release on consoles. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Rovio creating a completely cross-platform game with a PC version as well.
It’s also unclear how the game will play, given that it will be multiplayer. Fans of the franchise will have to wait for Rovio to reveal more information.
The current flagship game in the franchise is Angry Birds 2, which was released in 2015, with regular updates coming from Rovio. The game has more than 200 million downloads across Android and iOS.
The franchise’s success has been so immense that there have been several animated spin-offs. Furthermore, two movies have been released, with a third scheduled for 2023.
