All of the Ultra Beasts have begun appearing throughout the Pokemon world, from wormholes in DS games to raids in Pokemon Go.
First appearing in the postgame of Pokemon Sun and Moon, Ultra Beasts come from outer space and an alternate dimension. Different game designers have confirmed multiple inspirations for Ultra Beasts. GameFreak’s Shigeru Ohmori stated in a Sun and Moon companion guide that the aliens were modeled after invasive species while artist Ken Sugimori added in a separate interview that Ultra Beasts were illustrated to include contradictory elements. Regardless of how they were developed, the 11 aliens that fans got are absolutely stellar.
Here are all of the Ultra Beasts in Pokemon.
There are seven original extradimensional Ultra Beasts in Pokemon with four more added in Ultra Sun and Moon.
Designation: UB-01 Symbiont
Type: Rock and Poison
Starting off strong, Nihilego showcases the contradictory characteristics that Sugimori referenced. Rock is super effective against poison when battling, and Nihilego was the only Pokemon of that typing until Scarlet and Violet. Trainers looking for it should be careful or risk falling prey to its parasitic nature.
Designation:UB-02 Absorption
Type: Bug and Fighting
As a Pokemon Sun version exclusive, Buzzwole comes alongside box legendary Solgaleo. Much like Nihilego, its types also contrast as bug resists fighting, and the emphasis for this Ultra Beast is on the fighting aspect. Buzzwole can absorb energy and, with a bodily chemical reaction, get super ripped.
Designation: UB-02 Beauty
Type: Bug and Fighting
Pheromosa is solely in Pokemon Moon with Lunala and serves as Buzzwole’s counterpart. It leans into the bug part of bug and fighting, with delicate antennae and attractive insect-like pheromones. Fun fact, Pheromosa is the fastest living creature in the Pokemon world, clocking in at 120 miles per hour.
Designation: UB-03 Lightning
Type: Electric
The only original Ultra Beast to have one type, Xurkitree looks like a powerline come to life. Unlike a powerline, however, it can draw electricity from the ground rather than dispersing it.
Designation: UB-04 Blaster
Type: Steel and Flying
Another Moon exclusive, Celesteela is another prime example of odd typing. Steel resists flying, and the alien is one of only three Pokemon with this dual typing. Celesteela makes its own flammable gas that it uses for flying and battle, though some scientists suspect that it could essentially become a rocket.
Designation: UB-04 Blade
Type: Grass and Steel
Kartana is Celesteela’s Pokemon Sun counterpart. Though steel resists grass like it does flying, its typing is less of an exception and more of an interesting note. Trainers searching for Kartana should come prepared with several fire type Pokemon and be careful of its razor-sharp sword arms.
Designation: UB-05 Glutton
Type: Dark and Dragon
Finally, Guzzlord is the last of the Ultra Beasts found in Pokemon Sun and Moon. It uses its two massive tongues to eat anything and everything in sight so long as it’s awake. Scientists have noted that Guzzlord must be using the matter for something since it certainly isn’t coming out the other end.
Designation: UB Adhesive
Type: Poison
Poipole marks the second generation of Ultra Beasts and is the only one that evolves. In its own world and dimension, it chose to become a friend to the people who lived there. As an alien, it loves spraying poison and laughing about it.
Designation: UB Stinger
Type: Poison and Dragon
Poipole’s evolution keeps the poison and adds, well, even more poison. Unlike some of the other aliens above, Naganadel’s typing doesn’t force it to have a four-time weakness to another type. Good luck, trainers.
Designation: UB Assembly
Type: Rock and Steel
Steel is super effective against rock, but that hasn’t stopped Stakataka from stirring up trouble wherever the wormhole takes it. Thought to be many individual creatures stacked to create a colony, it brings to mind the bricks in a wall and a defensive nature. Defensive, sure, but also ready to attack if need be.
Designation: UB Burst
Type: Fire and Ghost
Blacephelon loses out on the “Pokemon who looks most like a clown” competition, but only because Mr. Mime exists. Even compared to the other Ultra Beasts, it’s apparently one of a kind. It certainly comes in with a bang in the form of a literal explosion.
Since their first appearance in 2016 in Alola, the extradimensional aliens haven’t stayed contained to just four islands. They can be found in several other games and regions including the following.
Wherever the Ultra Beasts go, trouble is sure to follow. Players in whatever game they may appear in should go in prepared.
