Ahead of the release of C5S4 and a teased superhero theme, fans are looking toward past Fortnite Marvel collabs for hints for the future.
Fortnite and Marvel have had numerous collaborations since releasing the Black Widow and Star-Lord skins back in 2019. With both major and minor events, battle passes. and single skin drops, Marvel is one of the most prolific influences on Fortnite and a fan favorite collab. As the presumed start date for Chapter 5 Season 4 nears, Epic Games has been hinting that Doctor Doom will play a role through various different leaks.
With all that, here’s a celebratory look back at the history of Fortnite Marvel collabs, from 2019 to the brand new Deadpool skin in the shop today.
In 2019, Epic Games introduced the Endgame LTM in battle royale in conjunction with the theatrical release of Avengers: Endgame.
The Endgame LTM came with cosmetics, challenges, and rewards available for the eleven days following the movie’s debut. Players had to complete various tasks in battle royale, some of which required purchasing game items including the following.
After completing ten challenges, Fortnite would grant the Avengers Quinjet glider. Individual challenge completion rewards consisted of superhero emotes, banners, sprays, and XP.
2020 was the year of the Fortnite Marvel collab, with an entire season based around defeating the supervillain Galactus as a tie-in for The Nexus War.
Epic Games released Chapter 2 Season 4 in August of 2020 and brought numerous Marvel heroes and villains into Fortnite.
Written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Greg Land, the single issue of Nexus War: Thor served as a prequel to the new Fortnite season. Thor believes that Galactus is the lesser of two evils and agrees to be his herald only to find that Galactus intends to conquer and consume the known universe. The Norse god must protect the Zero Point and Fortnite at all costs. Luckily, he has some friends willing to help.
After Thor’s arrival on the island, Tony Stark first imported different locations from the Marvel universe and then upgraded and multiplied the battle buses. Players during this time were fighting Galactus’ Gorgers across prominent settings like Doom’s Domain, the Sentinel Graveyard, and New York.
Ultimately, Galactus was after the Zero Point, a powerful primordial entity in battle royale. Much of the Fortnite storylines in Chapters 1-3 center around the Zero Point, and protecting, or keeping it contained, was a regular theme early on.
Many fans were pleased with the iconic imagery of the available skins. Key heroes included Thor, Iron Man, Storm, Wolverine, and more. Also popular were items like the Silver Surfer’s surfboard and the Stark Industries energy rifle.
Galactus’ arrival in December of 2020 was the end-all-be-all event of the season. Players participated by using Tony Stark’s flying battle buses to get close to Galactus and then dropping a load of gamma bombs Galactus consumed. The explosion transported the conqueror and all of his Gorgers back to wherever they came from.
This season’s Hideout, the battle pass main menu, was set in the helicarrier but followed the usual pass pricing tiers. With the premium battle pass, players could unlock skins including Thor, Storm, and Tony Stark along with other rewards like vbucks and new character-specific challenges.
In comparison, the free tier offered mainly items like Groot’s sap axes as well as sparsely distributed emotes and stickers. However, players who got the free battle pass could still complete weekly challenges to get cool character skins such as the following.
Going beyond just game content, Fortnite and Marvel teamed up to create a comic book series that was both set in Fortnite and playable.
Another comic collab, he five-part crossover Fortnite x Marvel: Zero War was written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Sergio Davila. Following Spider-Man and Wolverine, they must team up with Fortnite characters and other heroes to find the Zero Shard and end the endless war. The series ran during 2022 during C3S3-C3S4.
By reading the comic, Fortnite players could get codes and unlock limited-availability in-game items and skins. Players could also wait until the skins came into the shop, with some last seen as recently as April 2024. The unlockable items were:
During the weekend leading up to the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in May 2023, Fortnite players engaged in numerous in-game activities to help or hinder Miles Morales.
Players during mid-late May in Fortnite had several options to participate in the Across the Spider-Verse crossover event. Whether they wanted to battle for Miles or Spider-Man 2099 or go on fetch quests, there was something for everyone.
Would you rather save everyone or maintain the timeline? During the Fortnite Web Battles, players could choose whether they were Team Miles or Team 2099 and complete daily battle quests to earn points. At the end of the day, whichever team earned the most collective points would win a special emote.
Web Battles weren’t just a team sport – by collecting points, individual players could unlock the emotes, a logo spray, and even Spider-Ham’s Mallet pickaxe. All items were exclusive to the event.
The weekly challenges during the Across the Spider-Verse event required players to first plaster Where’s Miles? posters across the island and then collect web shooters to use in Battle Royale. Gathering web shooters would unlock the Miles Mark spray. Then, swinging with the web shooter granted the Silk & Cologne (EI8HT version) Lobby Track.
On the Fortnite island, there were two ways to collect web-shooters. Players could either find them around on the ground or trade the newly introduced Gwen Stacy gold bars for them. Epic Games released a Spider-Gwen skin in the previous season.
After helping Miles and Miguel, who wouldn’t want to purchase playable skins? Miles’ Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 were each available for 1,500 vbucks, or they could be bundled with other items and emotes for 2,600 vbucks.
Epic Games and Marvel have released almost 70 different Fortnite player skins, not including styles. Some, like the original Spider-Man, were only available in battle passes in various seasons and are italicized below. Some aren’t vaulted but make infrequent appearances in the Fortnite Shop. Others, bolded below, are available for players to purchase now.
The Fortnite Marvel skins released include, from the oldest released to the most recent skins coming out today:
Two of the latest and most-anticipated skin additions include Deadpool and Wolverine in collaboration with the release of the aptly-titled feature film Deadpool & Wolverine. Both are on the more expensive side of skins at 2000 V-Bucks, other than the Royalty & Warriors and Guardians packs that cost real US currency.
Additionally, most of the Fortnite Marvel skins also come in Lego form and with their own bundles of emotes and items. Will more regular or Lego form Marvel skins be coming back into the shop soon? It’s likely with the fast-approaching arrival of C5S4.
