The new LCS 2026 format explained

The LCS is back from the dead! After a rebrand back from the League of Legends Championship of the Americas (LTA), the North American professional league becomes the League of Legends Championship Series once again. The LCS returns with a format change, so let’s dive into it.

2026 LCS: A focus on regional competition again

The return to the LCS branding means undoing the merger between the Americas. In 2026, North America will host only intra-regional competitions (aside from the international events, of course). That means no more cross-conference playoffs and no more shared seeds between the North and the South.

A return to the traditional split structure

Like every other league, the 2026 LCS goes back to the traditional Spring and Summer split structure. Split 1 is replaced with an introductory tournament, the LCS Lock-In. Spring and Summer will both share a similar structure and replace splits 2 and 3, respectively.

2026 LCS Lock-In

In 2026, the LCS brings back the Lock-In tournament that was held at the start of 2021 and 2022. Only this time, it will be a Swiss stage similar to that of Worlds.

In the Lock-In Swiss stage, all teams play 3 matches, each against an opponent with the same score as them. Afterwards:

The 3-0 team and the three 2-1 teams are qualified for the play-offs.
Among the three 1-2 teams, the one with the best game record is also qualified.
The other two 1-2 teams will play a tiebreaker match, the winner of which also enters the playoffs.
The 0-3 team is eliminated.

Every match from the Swiss stage is a Best of 3 (Bo3).

The top 6 teams from the Swiss stage enter the playoffs. The Lock-In playoffs are a double-elimination bracket, where the 5th and 6th place teams start in the loser’s bracket. Every match is a Best of 5 (Bo5).

The champion of the 2026 LCS Lock-In will be the LCS representative at the 2026 First Stand.

2026 LCS Spring Split

The LCS Spring Split will feature a single round robin regular season. Each team plays every other team once, and all matches are Bo3.

The top 6 teams from the regular season advance to the playoffs, which use the same format as the Lock-In playoffs.

The two finalists at the 2026 LCS Spring Split playoffs will be the North American representatives at the 2026 Mid-Season Invitational.

2026 LCS Summer Split

The LCS Summer Split will use the same regular season format as the Spring Split. However, the Summer playoffs use a twist after that.

While still being a double-elimination tournament, the Summer Split playoffs use a different take on the format in three ways:

All 6 teams start in the higher bracket. However, the top 2 teams start at round 2, while the seeds 3 to 6 battle it out to join them.
The lower bracket is a gauntlet. Each team dropping there is slotted after the previous one. This means that a team that goes down to the loser’s bracket has to face every next team in succession if it wants to reach the grand finals.
Seeding matters more. The top two teams skip round 1, and the best team gets to pick their opponent for round 2. On top of that, the gauntlet contains one more or fewer match based on the seeding of the teams that drop down.

The top 3 teams at the 2026 LCS Summer playoffs qualify for the 2026 World Championship.

Dates for the 2026 LCS Summer Split

The dates for the splits aren’t announced yet, and will likely only be known a few weeks before each split kicks off. Still, they should roughly match 2025’s, meaning:

The 2026 LCS Lock-In starts around mid-January,
The 2026 LCS Spring Split starts around the beginning of April,
The 2026 LCS Summer Split starts around mid- or late July.

In 2026, the formats of the LCS and of the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) are nearly identical for the Spring and Summer Splits. Read about the LEC 2026 format changes here. The two leagues will only slightly differ in their playoff structure, as the LEC is host to 10 teams against the LCS’s 8.

This change allows for the major Western leagues to be united in more ways than simply dropping out of Worlds before the Semifinals every year since 2021.
